scary space rpg!

okay, folks. we actually played this mothership game i told you about rolling the characters up for last time ... and it is one big heap of nail-biting scary!

so we've all got our characters, right? (we rolled them up here) and i'm thinking they're a pretty rag-tag bunch, like, a "what are these guys all doing together anyhow" bundle of misfits: an ex-dentist with a bag of teeth, an android in a fleece-lined parka, a couple of marines, a hard-partying one-woman starship crew, and a mechanic named "spanky."

pretty quickly it turns out we're not all together. msg is the "warden" (gamemaster) and starts right off handing out these backgrounds for our characters, which end with a question about when we show up to the docking bay for this ship we're supposed to meet.

GMSG: Okay, these sheets tell you a little about what your character's initial situation is. You're all strangers, so don't share them with each other.
Akane: Secretive!
GMSG: Not really secretive, you just have some information that the other characters might not have, and part of the scenario may be affected by which characters share what information with which other characters.
Akane: So ... secretive for Akane, but Doctor Yamaguchi can blab it all?
GMSG: Basically, yes.
Ariel: That's a relief, because I don't know if my dumb character would remember to keep things secret!
Harriet: Ariel, dear, statistically a score of 23 is only somewhat below average for 6d10. Right, Warden?
Elle: What was your Intellect score again, Het?
Harriet: *Ahem* ... 23.
Elle: So you kind of have a vested interest in that not being such a bad score, hmm?
Harriet: It just stands to reason, if two of the six of us got that score, that's a third of the group, right? So at worst, it's probably, you know, in the bottom third of IQ ratings.
GMSG: Wellll ...
Harriet: Oh my. I'm about to find out I should stick to word issues and not try my hand at math, aren't I?
GMSG: There are six of you, but you each have four stats. That's two dozen total stat rolls, and three of those rolls came up as 23. That's more like one stat roll in 8 being a 23. But no given set of rolls produces perfect probability outcomes, so the actual odds could be less or more than that.
Harriet: I see. So it's ambiguous, but I guess we are probably somewhere in the bottom quarter or worse, Ariel.
Elle: Interesting.
Ariel: I don't like how you said that! What are you looking at?
Elle: I did a web search on dice and probabilities and found this spreadsheet tool. I just put in the number of dice and the desired score, and voila.
Ariel: You're so mean! "Voila" is bad, isn't it.
Elle: In this case, "voila" is about the bottom nine percent.
Ariel: omg, Hettie, we're so dumb.
Harriet: I'm ... well ... let's just take it as a role-playing challenge. Also, if our characters are that low of brow, let's make sure we make the worst possible decisions about how to help Elle's character out if she needs it.
Ariel: I guess I can try ... it's probably less of a challenge for me than you anyway.
Elle: Oh, hush. You don't have to be a walking dictionary to be smart.
Harriet: I'm mentally filing that slight away for the first time your character needs something from mine. Don't expect Spanky to provide a competent assist.
Elle: I'm an android. I don't expect that from any of you humans.
Sasha: I'm done reading my sheet. Very interesting!
Akane: So. These are such straits that Doctor Yamaguchi endures.
Claire: Party Pandy thinks it's par for the course. Nicely written too, MSG!
Ariel: Oh no. Now I'm dumb and behind!
Sasha: Then maybe close your yapper and read?
Ariel: Okay ...
Elle: Hmm. Hmm. All right then ...
Harriet: Given your description of this game, MSG, I'm seeing any number of ways this setup might go badly awry.
Ariel: Nooo, why'd you have to remind me? I was thinking my paper actually had some nice things on it!
GMSG: Is everybody done reading, then? Any questions? No? Well, in that case, everyone please write down the information I requested from you and pass it to me. No peeking at anyone else's notes!
Ariel: Am I already near Sash's character so I can just do whatever she does?
GMSG: Not at this point, no.
Ariel: Poop.
Sasha: Done. Here you go.
Harriet: I'm finished as well.
Claire: Me too.
Elle: Ariel, my little aprilcot, you might want to hurry or I'll be done too, and then you'll have the added stress of everyone waiting on you.
Ariel: I just ... I can't decide! I know what I would do, but Stickshift McDiggitt's in the bottom 10% of her class. Is she even going to remember the instructions? Hey, can I just roll and see if she remembers?
GMSG: Sure. That's going to be an Intellect roll. Do you have any skills that might apply to remembering things or being on schedule?
Ariel: Military Training! I bet they drilled that into us at boot camp for marines.
GMSG: That makes sense to me too, so you get a bonus of +10% for having a tier one skill that applies. Now just roll percentile dice and try to get under 33%.
Ariel: ... still not a very good chance ... are these ones my dice? Okay, rolling ... 68!
GMSG: Well, you definitely forgot something, but that's not a critical failure, so you might just be a little late or a little early. Roll again to see if you realize pretty quickly that you can look it up on the space equivalent of your smartphone.
Ariel: 51!
GMSG: Nope. Make a fear save now or you'll gain a point of stress. It's low stakes, so you have advantage on the roll. That means you get to roll twice and take the better roll.
Ariel: I roll 84 and 49.
GMSG: Add a point of stress, then. Eventually you'll figure out that you can look up the departure schedule on the spaceport's information interface. Or you just go as soon as you've got your stuff ready, and if you're way early, you're way early. You can pick how early or late you are.
Ariel: But ... the whole point of rolling is I didn't want to have to pick! Ugh! Okay, odd I'm early, even, I'm late. Odd. Now I'm rolling the number of hours. I guess I'll use this d4. And the answer is, 4 hours early.
GMSG: So you get to the spaceport a total of 6 hours before departure time, 4 hours earlier than passengers are recommended to arrive.
Ariel: I guess I'll get out my marble and play with it.
GMSG: Okay, so Stickshift McDiggitt is the first one to the spaceport and is playing with a vantablack marble while she waits for it to be time to go to the docking bay. Let's see what the rest of these notes say. Doctor Yamaguchi wants to make a good first impression, so she's 15 minutes early ... 4.25 hours before departure time. Pol d'Eurothein is going to be exactly punctual, so he shows up 4 hours beforehand. Akane, when you arrive at the docking bay, you can see The Inner Peace through the windows of the concourse. It's a beat-up, pretty old-looking freighter. Are you going to go down the access tunnel and try to board?
Akane: Mm ... any sign of people?
GMSG: Not that you can see. It looks like the ship's cargo bay doors are closed.
Akane: Yamaguchi will wait, then. At two minutes early, I will go and knock. Or does the door have a bell? Buzzer?
GMSG: You know there should be a comm panel at the end of the access corridor next to the airlock.
Akane: Good. I activate it at 4 hours, 2 minutes before departure time. What do I roll?
GMSG: You don't have to roll for something as simple as turning on a comm panel. If you were trying to repair it or bypass its systems, you'd roll. But not for mundane use.
Akane: Aha! Doctor Yamaguchi provides our first success in this game!
GMSG: Maybe not. You turn the panel on and activate the comm link, but you have to tell me what you say, and then I'll tell you what happens.
Akane: Hello! It is Yamaguchi Daika, here for the duty of medic for this ship!
Akane: What do they say to me?
GMSG: Nothing. You don't get a response.
Akane: Hmm. Maybe even 2 minutes early is too prompt. I will wait.
GMSG: At exactly 4 hours before departure time, you see an android walking down the access tunnel to you. Elle, as you walk punctually down the access tunnel, you see someone standing at the comm panel. Why don't you each describe yourselves?
Akane: Oh! I hadn't considered the visage of Yamaguchi! She is ... small, even for a Japanese person. This explains her weakling strength. Her garb is laboratorical, long white coat and so on. There's a patch of happy dog imagery on one shoulder with "Good Boy!" as the caption. The hair of her head is ... white! Cut severely at the level of the jaw. It's a bleach or artificial white, though, not agedness.
Elle: Pol d'Eurothein is a light blue color with aquamarine hair. His pupils are metallic grey. You see he's wearing a parka, zipped up regardless of the temperature here. On the parka is a "Security Guard" patch. His features are capable of expression, but at the moment he doesn't have one.
Akane: Yamaguchi will ask if this person is also for crewing The Inner Peace.
Elle: Yes.
Akane: Yamaguchi has a voice very high in pitch. It says, like this, "I am here early, but it's not giving any answer."
Elle: Did you try to activate the door and just go in?
Akane: "No. Perhaps it would be rude or an intrusion, when early."
Elle: Well, we're not early now.
Akane: "I will signal again." I operate the panel once more.
Elle: I tell her that's fine, but I also reach past her and hit the door button to see if it opens.
GMSG: It does not.
Akane: "You see? We must have patience." Does anyone answer yet?
GMSG: Not yet.
Elle: Here, step aside and I'll hack the door.
Akane: What? Our characters will get in such trouble!
Elle: Maybe. But that's what Pol says to you. While he's looking down at you with his cold, steel-colored eyes.
Akane: Yamaguchi makes way for this android of intimidation. But she isn't happy. "I think waiting is better ..."
Elle: Pol shrugs. Like, a stiff android shrug. He says, his orders are to be aboard the ship 4 hours before departure. If no one answers and the door is locked, perhaps it's meant as a test of our rigor in following instructions and our resourcefulness at solving problems. Warden, what do I need to roll to hack the door?
GMSG: Hacking is a tier two skill, so add 15% to your stat. You could use Speed if you're trying to get in as quickly as possible, or Intellect if you're being more methodical. There would be different consequences for failure depending on which you pick.
Elle: I got here on time and now we've wasted some time talking, so we're already late in Pol's view. I'll use Speed. It's coincidence that it's also my best stat. I roll a 20, way under the 61 I needed.
GMSG: Okay, you're doing very well and are almost done when the screen on the comm panel shows a pop-up with an image of a man in a captain's uniform. Do you keep going?
Elle: Yes.
GMSG: The pop-up is small, but you can see that the man looks exhausted and that his uniform is somewhat rumpled. He says, "Kellerman. You the new crew?"
Elle: Greetings, Captain Kellerman. I don't know whether we're all of the new crew or only two of a larger complement. But there are two of us.
GMSG: Okay, I'll buzz you in.
Elle: Unnecessary. I have almost finished bypassing the door's security lock.
GMSG: Just as you say that, you finish, and the door slides open. Kellerman looks like he's not quite getting it. "You what?"
Elle: As my employment file indicated, I'm knowledgable of many security protocols and coding structures. My orders were to be on board by a specific time, so to avoid being late, I hacked the door controls. It was quite easy, really. You might wish to invest in one of the spaceport's enhanced protocol levels if this alarms you.
GMSG: He just stares for a moment and then says, "Wait ... in the airlock. I'll meet you there."
Elle: I proceed into the airlock.
Akane: This android ... Yamaguchi is doubtful. But she will wait in the airlock also.
GMSG: When Kellerman arrives, he looks even worse close-up than he did on the video pop-up. Dark bags under his eyes, and his unkempt uniform clearly hasn't been washed recently.
Akane: Does his issue have indications for diagnosis?
GMSG: You can make either a First Aid or a Psychology roll.
Akane: Psychology is the best, right? +15% exceeds +10%. I use that. Roll is ... 18.
GMSG: It could just be exhaustion. But you notice a slight tremor in his hands that might be a sign of stim addiction when you put it together with the other clues.
Elle: Uh-oh. Do I notice that?
GMSG: I'm not sure if you have any pertinent skills, and as an android, you tend to think human bodies are subject to a bewildering array of malfunctions.
Elle: I do have Linguistics. Is he slurring any words, or maybe talking in some weird characteristic pattern?
GMSG: Would your character be looking for that?
Elle: Hmm. If I have to be honest, probably not.
GMSG: Go ahead and make an Intellect roll with disadvantage. That's rolling twice and taking the worse result.
Elle: Swell. Oh, look, 21 and 31, and I needed anything under 53.
GMSG: Something's definitely off with his speech, so you know he's got an issue. But you don't know if it's an illness or a substance problem or something congenital.
Elle: Probably congenital. So few humans are built to consistent specifications.
GMSG: Regardless, Kellerman shows you to the bunkroom so you can drop your stuff off, then gives you a tour of the ship. Pol, your workstation outside of hyperdrive is the computer. He tells you some functionality issues it has that drive him crazy and tells you to fix them, since you're such an amazing hacker. Doctor Yamaguchi's workstation is the medbay, just down the hall from the cryosleep chamber. Once you know where everything is, he leaves you to settle in and just says to be at your stations an hour before departure time.
Elle: I'll immediately start working to fix the software issues.
GMSG: They're minor and not in critical systems, but some of them are boondoggles of patched, old code, so it will take you quite a while, even though there's no particular risk in the task.
Akane: Yamaguchi conducts inventory at the medbay. What is there? What is not there? Is a should-be-there thing also a not-there thing? It's especially a narrow look at all drugs.
GMSG: You pretty easily determine that the pharmaceutical stores are supposed to have about two dozen stim packs more than are currently present.
Akane: What is the current presence of stim packs?
GMSG: I'll roll a d10. Only 5.
Akane: This Kellerman! What a drug-hog!
GMSG: All right. Those tasks will keep you both busy for a couple of hours at least, and around that time some of the other characters are getting to the spaceport.
Ariel: I'm already there, remember!
GMSG: Yes.
Sasha: Playing with your marble.
Ariel: It's a cool marble!
GMSG: Where do you think you're doing this, by the way? It's like an airport -- there's an area with shops and food, there's a lounge, and there are waiting areas on the concourse that the access tunnels branch off of.
Ariel: I'd probably wait in the waiting area nearest my ride. Until I got hungry. And I guess if I got there so early because I was worried about not remembering the right time, probably I didn't eat any breakfast. So I would probably go to the food area when my tummy started getting grumbly.
GMSG: Okay, make a Body save. If you fail, you get hungry after an hour or two. If you critically fail, you get hungry right away.
Ariel: Why are you only telling me what happens if I fail? It's like you're planning that I'm going to fail already!
Elle: Maybe he's just trying to motivate you to prove him wrong.
Ariel: Well ... there! I roll a 29, and my save is a 35. Pbbbttt!
GMSG: It takes you about 4 hours to get really hungry, then.
Ariel: Okay, um ... 6 hours minus 4 hours is math even I can do. That's 2 hours, which is right when they said we should get to the spaceport. (Not that Stickshift remembers that part.)
GMSG: Great. The notes I got from Sash and Hettie both said they'd show up at the recommended time. Do either of you two go to the dining area?
Harriet: I imagine Spanky's hungry, so sure.
Sasha: Narcy would probably go to the lounge and get a drink.
GMSG: Okay. I'm going to say there are 6 tables with open spots. Aers and Het, roll a d6 each to see if you happen to end up at the same table.
Ariel: 3!
Harriet: 2.
GMSG: Close! You're at adjacent tables but not the same one. Either of you think you'd do anything noteworthy that would attract the other's attention?
Ariel: Probably not. I'm just going to eat and then play with my marble some more.
Harriet: That Rimwise skill means I'm probably staying alert for signs of shady or suspicious stuff going on. Would I notice her playing with the marble?
GMSG: Make a Rimwise and Intellect roll.
Harriet: Only a 33% chance. Ouch. Here we go ... Aha! That's a 13.
GMSG: So while on the lookout for criminal shenanigans, you notice this woman playing with a really, really black marble at the next table.
Ariel: Like, for the whole hour until it's time to go.
GMSG: Go ahead and describe Stickshift McDiggitt, since I'm guessing Hettie's character watches her for a bit to size her up.
Ariel: Well ... "McDiggitt" would be a name from one of those English countries, right?
Harriet: British, more precisely. Scotland, most precisely.
Ariel: Yes! That makes it easy. Scottish people all have like, red hair and stuff, right?
Harriet: That's really quite an appalling stereotype, dear.
Ariel: Is red hair bad or something? I mean, I can't have a character this dumb and pick some background that everybody stereotypes as being dumb, can I? Wouldn't that be worse than assuming somebody has red hair?
Claire: Some of us are kinda in favor of red hair ...
Ariel: Yeah! See?
Harriet: I'm just saying that brown-haired and black-haired and blond-haired Scottish people probably get pretty unhappy when they hear people assuming all of Scotland has red hair.
Ariel: Fine! Stickshift McDiggitt is Scottish, but she's ... black! And she used to be super-smart, but these jerkwad racists beat her up really bad and left her with brain damage. She was a genius when she was in her archaeology class! After that, she was pretty pissed off and wanted to do something about bad guys, so she joined the marines! And her "For Science!" jacket patch is there because after she got beat up, the person who came along and helped her get to the hospital was a scientist and they put the jacket on her because she was in shock and then they just let her keep it because they knew she could use it more than they needed it. Well ... and also I guess because it had her blood all over it by then. So how's that? She's a tough-looking black chick whose face looks like it got beaten up really badly and she's wearing this "For Science!" jacket with old bloodstains on it while she eats a plate of chicken tenders and plays with this really black marble that maybe she keeps partly because it's black but it's clean and smooth and not cracked at all and she thinks it's like how she could have been in a universe that wasn't so freaking messed-up!
Elle: Holy shit, that's fucking dark, babe.
Ariel: Well, sorry! I just wanted everybody to know I wasn't being all racist saying Scottish people all have red hair.
Harriet: On the plus side, I think you just destroyed everyone else's backstory. That was amazing. And I'm really sorry I made that stereotype comment. I know you don't have it in your heart to think badly of any group of people.
Ariel: I mean ... except for bad guys. I do think badly of them, if they count as a group.
Harriet: Well, let's pretend they don't. As far as I'm concerned, they can all be considered anomalous outliers. Even if some of the evidence suggests otherwise.
GMSG: I won't comment on the volume of that evidence.
Harriet: Good, because I'd just as soon get back to our imaginary science-fiction universe of horrible stuff than think so much about real-world horrible stuff. Spanky Spannerman watches Stickshift play with the marble for a bit and then says, "Hey, tough gal. What's up with the cool marble?"
Sasha: Do you need a hankie, Aers? You're looking kind of sniffly there.
Ariel: No, I'm fine. Stickshift will tell Spanky all about the marble while they're waiting. Like, all the archaeological details of where it was found and what it's made of and why she likes it so much.
Harriet: Can I roll Intellect and Rimwise to generally suss out the fact that there's a backstory with considerable gravitas going on here?
GMSG: Sure. I'll even let you roll with advantage.
Harriet: Oh dear. A 42 and an 88.
GMSG: Whew, good thing that was advantage and not disadvantage. Rolling doubles above your goal number is a critical failure.
Harriet: Unfortunately, 42 is still a failure.
GMSG: Sure. But it's also the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," so maybe it's sort of a success in the grander scheme.
Harriet: At any rate, if Stickshift is in any way looking for a companion, I'm sure she and Spanky will be fast friends by the time we need to get to the ship for departure.
Ariel: Aw! Thank you, Hettie!

[closing note here: there was a lot more to this session, but this seems like a really good place to break for now! see you next time for part two ... xoxo, claire]

Chapter Eight

(Chapter One)
(Chapter Two)

Bitsy ducked back behind the fern.

What good is this going to do me? Gigory's already seen me, and Cord hasn't!

But having retreated, she didn't want to poke out again. So she tried peering between the fern fronds. Eight or ten meters away, Cord slid his phone into his pocket and looked around for her. She decided, instead of leaning past them, to push the fronds up and out of her way with one hand so she could wave with the other.

It worked!

Cord saw, smiled, and walked in her direction. But ...

Instead of the plastic foliage continuing to weigh her arm down, she felt it lifting up and away. In a panic, she turned and saw the whole potted plant teetering back from her. Oh fritz! Desperately, she grabbed at the thick central cluster of frond stems. For a moment, she thought she'd managed to at least pause its fall, but a squawk from the far side made her refocus and see that the fern had simply landed across the back of an android at the next table. She opened her mouth to blurt an apology ...

But then two hands appeared next to hers on the green plastic thicket, and suddenly it was lifting back up into place. She saw wrists attached to the hands, jutting from a pair of sky-blue sleeves that she realized (because she'd seen the shirt in line just a moment ago) belonged to Gigory.

"Are you all right?" she heard him asking the android who'd been fernally assaulted. They grumbled in reply, then turned their grumble into a "Thank you," because it was clear Gigory had swooped in to stop the plant falling, and they didn't seem to connect Bitsy to the incident at all.

Stabilizing the fern, he pivoted to look at her and transferred his concern in the process. "What about you, Bitsy? Is --"

"Is everything all right?"

Naturally, it was Cord.

new game!

things have been kinda slow on the dungeon crawl classics front and broken worlds front here lately. we maybe binged a few too many dcc modules, and for broken worlds we just can't figure out who should do the gamemastering next.

kind of a stuck-in-a-rut sort of feeling overall, i guess.

but msg just came across this game called mothership on some rpg pdf website and bought it for $7 (which sounds suspiciously cheap to me) and is excited about playing it and more importantly, excited about game-mastering it.

path of least resistance time, people!

so here's how things went when we rolled up characters.

(whoops! first i have to warn longtime readers that you're going to see a new name at the table because we met this super-cool japanese girl online. that's going great and i should probably blog about it, but later.)

(as usual, typing thanks to msg for the session notes. thanks for taking shift-key duty, babe!)

Sasha: Yes! Gaming! I've been wondering when we'd get back to it!
Ariel: Me too!
Elle: So what's the game and who's the gamemaster?
Akane: Also what's a gamemaster? Like a dungeon master?
MSG: The game's a new one, and it's a new kind of rpg for us because it's science fiction. And yes, a gamemaster is like a dungeon master, but in this game they call that person the Warden.
Akane: Warden! Sounds prisony! Is this a game of space jail?
Ariel: I don't know if I want to go to space jail ...
MSG: It's not about space jail. But just as fair warning, it is supposed to be kind of scary. It's called "Mothership," and it's a science fiction horror game.
Elle: I get the seat next to Ariel so I can squeeze her when she jumps or gets too nervous.
Ariel: Hey! How do we know you're not the one who's going to get scared?
Claire: I'm sure Elle was just kidding you, Aers. But you know ... you are kind of more sensitive than some of us ...
Ariel: I think that's a good thing!
Elle: Mmm, I do too.
Hettie: Dare I hope that the rules are on the simpler side for this game? I only just reached a point with dungeon crawl classics where I felt confident in my grasp of the details ... and I gather Akane is less than a journeyman roleplayer.
Akane: Does "less than a journeyman" mean naive to this activity? Yes? It's a truthful impression, then. I only played a little Dungeons and Dragons with a very dodgy dungeon master.
MSG: Well, not to worry, either of you. The rules are pretty darn simple in this game.
Ariel: Nice! That sounds like a lot less work. (Don't say it, Sasha!)
Sasha:  }: P
Elle: Can we get on to learning the rules, then?
MSG: Sure. I think it's probably easiest to do it as we're rolling up characters. Who wants to go first?
Hettie: I see Sasha with her arm up, but since Akane's new, maybe we should offer the chance to her? Only if you want to, Akane.
Akane: First! If I say yes, do I trample Sasha's emotions? But if I say no, does everyone think, "This Akane ... so timid ...?" No, don't tell me! Akane will be bold! Yes, I choose first!
MSG: Great. Here's a character sheet. Your character's name goes at the top, but you can make that up when you know more about the character.
Akane: Um ... why is "Stress" right at the top of this sheet? I don't even know a rule yet, and already there is stress? I'm nervous.
MSG: Stress is pretty important in this game. The more bad things happen, the more your stress goes up. When it gets too bad, you have to make a roll or you'll panic and do crazy things.
Akane: I see. It says starts at 2, so I just write a 2 there?
MSG: Yes.
Akane: Now I must turn the sheet sideways to read this thing ... "Roll 6DIO for each of your stats." What's DIO? Where do I get 6?
MSG: That's 6 d10. This is a ten-sided die, and here are five more.
Akane: I remember these from D&D with dodgy ex-boyfriend. But not so many of them! Well, here's roll number one ... 7, 3, 4, 4, 2, 3 ... my strength is 734,423? So much higher than it was in D&D!
MSG: You add them together, so that's 23.
Akane: Ah ... 23 is still better than in D&D. It's a good start, right?
MSG: Actually a little below average, but that's okay.
Akane: Yes, now I see they're all below 5 except the 7. Rolls of weakness! Now my character is poorly physiqued. It's okay, next roll ... 8, 8, 2, 5, 5, 4, better! Speed is 32!
MSG: Strength was pretty obvious. Speed covers running and reacting, gaining initiative, that sort of thing.
Akane: I'm calculating. I remember from D&D now, average roll is lowest number on die plus highest number on die divided by 2 equals 5.5 for d10 equals 33 when you roll 6 at once ... Game Akane is sub-par in speed too! Next roll, Intellect! Game Akane will be smart, watch! 1, 9, 6, 6, 7, 5 ... 34. Sigh. Last is Combat. 10! Oh, but also a 1. Then 2, 5, 5, 6. My Combat is ... 29. So Game Akane is pretty average in everything except musculature. I guess it's better than all 23's!
Hettie: I like your positivity.
Akane: Thank you! What's next?
MSG: You need to pick a class. Are you a Teamster, which is basically just a starship crew member, or an Android, or a Scientist, or a Marine?
Akane: I'm looking to that section ... what are Saves? Why are the first two Sanity and Fear? My stress ... increasing! Do I add to the Stress number now?
MSG: No, that's your character's Stress, not yours. The saves show how well you resist things that might drive you crazy or terrify you. The next two after that, Body and Armor, are how well you resist physical afflictions and damage. But the most important thing is to pick a character type that you'd like to play.
Akane: It's already decided, when I said Game Akane will be smart. I see Scientist is very good at Sanity Saves and has +10 to Intellect. Now I'm at 44.
MSG: Pretty good.
Akane: Eh ... maximum roll of 60 + 10 would be 70! But 44, it's liveable.
Sasha: Maybe! It's a horror game, so maybe not!
Akane: Could be for the best though, right? If Game Akane is so average, it's no big loss if she dies, I think.
Claire: I'd call that a sensible attitude.
Akane: Real Akane has Sensible stat of 7, 7, 8, 6, 10 ... 38! Too bad there's no Sensible stat for Game Akane. What's next? The sheet has gear packages and says roll for trinket and patch?
MSG: The gear is what you start with, and the trinket and patch are just to give some hints of what kind of person your character is, maybe.
Akane: Scientist Akane needs ... Excavation gear? No. Exploration gear? Maybe? Extermination gear, definitely not. Aha, Examination gear! It's a match!
MSG: Good. Next roll percentile dice. That's 2 d10, and use one with two digits on it so you get a tens digit and a ones digit.
Akane: Clever! Um ... another 29, like my Combat.
MSG: Bag of assorted teeth.
Akane: WHAT? It's so creepy! Why do I have teeth?
Ariel: Maybe you're a tooth scientist?
Akane: Wait, right. It's appropriate for a scientist to have some teeth, obviously.
MSG: Percentile dice again for your patch.
Akane: 84.
MSG: Hm. It's a patch that says, "GOOD BOY!"
Akane: ??? What's it supposed to mean? Is Game Akane a boy?
Hettie: I think the point is for you to think of something it means, to help define your interests or personality.
Akane: Oh. "GOOD BOY!" ... I think it's for saying to a dog. Can my patch have a dog? Happy, with its tongue hanging out?
MSG: Absolutely. Does this stuff give you enough ideas to name your character yet?
Akane: Nnn ... teeth ... dog ... maybe she is a dog dentist? Doctor Yamaguchi ... Daika, dog dentist! But she became too sad with dog cavities, so moved to other sciencing.
Elle: I like it.
MSG: Okay then. All that's left is to pick your skills. Pick two of these for being a Scientist, then you have 3 more points to spend.
Akane: That's not so many skills, I think.
MSG: It'll work out.
Akane: There must be Biology for a dog dentist. Hmm. These others ... I think I only like "Computers." Now 3 more points?
MSG: Yes, and those ones in the second column take 2 points each.
Akane: Even fewer skills that way!
MSG: True, but look at some of those second-column skills. A lot of them are pretty useful.
Akane: Okay, 1 point in First Aid. It's closest to dentistry, right? Left are 2 points. How about "Psychology"? With all the Fear and Sanity and Stress, I think it's a game in need of therapy!
Sasha: Are you being silly, or is that actually a good idea?
Akane: Hmm. Does one exclude either?
Sasha: I guess not! Okay, my turn!
Akane: Here are dice.
Sasha: Thank you. Pow! 54 Strength! Pow! 32 Speed! Pow! 31 Intellect! Ka-BOOM! 39 Combat!
Akane: These rolls! You are --
Sasha: Marine!
Akane: --much better --
Sasha: Plus 5 on Combat is 44! 49 if another marine is near!
Akane: -- than Akane --
Sasha: "Extermination" package!
Akane: -- with dice ...
Sasha: Trinket -- spiked bracelet! Patch -- "Fix Me First" ... uh, what's this word in the parentheses?
Hettie: Ah. "Caduceus." It's that medical symbol with the snakes that twine around a staff.
Sasha: Perfect! That's what better happen if I get hurt, then. Skills! Let's see ... I get Military Training right off the bat, and then I'm gonna pick ... Firearms! Only one point left, let's say Athletics, and ... done!
Akane: Your character seems much superior to mine.
Sasha: That's okay, because I'll be your best bud since you've got the First Aid chops.
Akane: Okay!
Claire: Does your character have a name?
Sasha: Umm ... Nancy ... Danger. Because Danger is my middle name.
Ariel: But you didn't write a last name.
Sasha: It's classified. I have to kill you if you find out.
Ariel: Also, it looks like you wrote "Narcy" instead of "Nancy."
Sasha: That's even better! Sounds more science-fictiony. Here, you go next.
Ariel: I guess, okay ... Strength, here goes ... 31. Speed ... 36. Intellect ... 23! Oh no, I'm so dumb!
Elle: Maybe you're not dumb, sweetie, you just don't always think things through.
Ariel: I don't know. Can I be a Scientist too and then I'll at least be average smart?
MSG: Well, there are 6 players and only 4 classes, so there will have to be more than one of something.
Sasha: Or you can be a marine like me and we'll both get that extra +5 on Combat when we're together.
Ariel: Ooh, good! And since I'm dumb I'll just let you make all the decisions so I don't have to think about it.
Sasha: Better roll your patch first. Maybe it'll say "Independent Thinker" and then you'll have to come up with your own ideas.
Ariel: Okay. Well, I'm taking this "Exploration" package instead of Extermination so we don't have the exact same stuff. Plus, this one has food!
MSG: Percentile dice.
Ariel: 26. "Vantablack marble"? What even is that?
Hettie: Google says Vantablack is a brand name for a kind of superblack coating that reflects virtually all light.
Ariel: So it's just a really black marble? Okay ... well, thanks, Hettie. I don't feel as much like a 23 Intellect if even you had to look it up.
Hettie: No problem.
Ariel: My patch roll is ... 79. The table says ... "For Science!" Oh no, I knew I should have been a Scientist. Why does a Marine have a patch about "For Science!"
Elle: Maybe you just borrowed someone's jacket and never gave it back.
Ariel: That makes sense. With a 23 Intellect, I probably forgot.
Sasha: Or they died.
Ariel: Brr! Don't say that kind of thing!
Sasha: I think in this game maybe you're just going to have to deal with it, Aers. What skills are you going to pick?
Ariel: Hmm. No choice about Military Training. If my character was smart, she'd figure out the best set of these fighting kinds of skills. But she's not, so I'm going to say she has ... Driving ... and Scavenging ... and ... Archaeology! That's how she got the marble -- she took an archaeology class and scavenged it from someplace the class went digging.
Akane: I like this! You're so creative!
Ariel: Thank you!
Elle: Name time, babe.
Ariel: Oh no. This is the hardest part. I borrowed the jacket, so the patch isn't a clue, and I scavenged the marble, so that's not a clue ... but I can drive and I like archaeology so ... "Stickshift ... McDiggitt." How's that?
Elle: I'm in awe.
Ariel: Are you being sarcastic?
Elle: Absolutely not.
Ariel: Okay! Here, then, you can have the dice.
Elle: Let's see if I can go even faster than Sash. Stats: 29, 41, 38, 32. I like that Androids get a high Fear save and a plus to Speed and Intellect, so I end up with 29, 46, 43, 32. Don't know why, but I'm picking the "Excavation" package ... patch number 1! "Security Guard Patch." Okay, trinket is 78, Hooded Parka, Fleece Lined. Skills, I automatically get Linguistics, Computers, and Mathematics, then 2 points that I'll put in Hacking. Name ... Pol d'Eurothein.
Hettie: Classic.
Elle: You want the dice next?
Hettie: I'll defer to Claire.
Claire: Thanks, Het! I'm thinking we probably need a Teamster so at least one of us knows about spaceships. Ouch, 20 for my Strength!
Akane: Even weaker than my dog dentist! So sad, poor Claire ... we share a misery.
Claire: Well, I don't want to seem like I'm trying to out-do you, but Teamsters get +5 to Strength, so ...
Akane: I'm weaklingest again? *sigh*
Claire: Speed 33 plus 5 for a total of 38 ... Intellect 33, and Combat 28. "Excavation" kit for me too ... My trinket is a DNR beacon necklace, so I guess I'm not sticking too close to Akane ...
Akane: What's DNR? I don't understand the stand-offishness.
Elle: "Do Not Resuscitate."
Akane: Really? So lackadaisical!
Claire: Aha, my patch backs it up: "Work Hard/Party Harder." I think my name will be "Party Patty." No, "Party Paula." No, Elle's already "Pol," that'll sound confusing. What's a good "P" name?
Hettie: Pandora.
Claire: I like it! "Party Pandora" ... maybe "Pandy" for short. "Party Pandy ... Fatale." Okay, skills. Zero-G and Mechanical Repair are automatic ... I'd rather take Piloting than Heavy Machinery, I think ... and then 4 points.
Akane: So many points of skill for Teamsters!
Claire: Yeah, it's pretty cool. I'm picking Engineering and Astrogation. Party Pandy's like a one-woman spaceship crew. Harriet, you're up. Here are the dice.
Hettie: I implore the whims of fate to guide these rolls. Strength: 28; Speed: 36; Intellect: 23; Combat: 38. We're mental peers, it seems, Ariel.
Ariel: Oh, good! I'm not the dumbest?
Sasha: You will be if she's an Android or Scientist.
Ariel: Please don't pick those, Hettie!
Hettie: I was actually liking that bonanza of skill points Claire got. I think I'll go with Teamster as well. My trinket is a Spanner and my patch is "#1 Worker." I'll have to decide if that was awarded with irony or out of praise. Hmm. I'll ponder it. On to skills ... I suppose I'll pick Heavy Machinery since Claire skipped that one. Then Rimwise, Firearms, and Athletics.
Sasha: What the heck is "Rimwise"?
Hettie: Honestly? I don't care. But it's on the path to Firearms, so I'll live with it even if it's useless.
Ariel: ("That's what she said...")
MSG: It's actually a skill with a lot of potential. It covers everything to do with outer rim colonies and the seedy parts of the galaxy.
Hettie: Nice. If I'm into seediness, I'll take the equipment package with all the drugs: Examination. Now I just need a name. I think I'll be a guy ... "Spanky Spannerman." The patch is unironic.
MSG: There we go, then. We have our party. Ready to play?
Sasha: You bet!
Ariel: I hope so ...
Elle: Strike while the iron is hot so these characters won't just sit and gather dust like our Broken Worlds ones have been doing.
Claire: I'm in.
Hettie: So say we all.

okay, this post is long enough! game writeup next time! (update ... it's here!)

Chapter Seven

Why am I panicking?

Bitsy glanced back over her shoulder and saw Cord still at the cream-and-sugar stand.

So what if Gigory sees me having coffee with a guy? It's not like he'll be able to tell Cord is Real. And so what if Gigory waves or something and Cord asks who he is? I mean, he's not going to be shocked that I have coworkers ...

But her processor plotted out a crazy decision tree where Does Gigory turn around? (Y/N) led to Does Gigory spot Bitsy? (Y/N) then to Does Gigory come over to say hi? (Y/N) and of course Does Gigory for some reason have to mention that Bitsy invited him to dinner? (Y/N/Please dear Loj, N. N!)

Just then, she spotted an android tipping back the last of a Tera at a spot on the far side of a large, potted plastic fern. Not a great table, because the fern fronds crowded one of the two chairs, but at least there would be something between her and the slow-moving line Gigory was in.

She stepped over and tried her best to beam politely. "Excuse me, ma'am? If you're about to leave, would you mind me taking this table? I don't mean to rush you -- it's just so crowded ..."

The woman lowered her cup and blinked a moment, then put the fingers of her free hand over her mouth to cover a little burp. "Oop," she said, cheeks coloring with an embarrassment routine. "Sure, I was going anyway."

Bitsy thanked her effusively as she stood up. But the moment both chairs were vacant, a new decision tree opened up in her processor. Do I take the lady's seat where it will be easier for Cord to spot me? (Y/N) [If Y, next question; if N, sit in the chair where I'm going to get a fern frond stuck in my hair.] Once I've sat in that chair, won't it be easier for Gigory to spot me too? (Y/N) [If Y, sit in fern-molestation chair; if N, sit in good chair and make Cord sit with a floppy fern distracting him the whole conversation.]

She sat in the fern-infringed chair and immediately regretted it.

My hair! With a single effortless graze, a plastic frond hit the back of her head, rode up and over it, and hung swaying right in her bangs. Worse, when she tried to look around an see if Cord had spotted her humiliation the fern tracked with her head like the world's most tenacious pop-up. She had to duck forward and lean and twist her spine to get him into view, and when she did ...

He'd stopped to frown at his phone again. Something there clearly bothered him -- he grimaced and responded one-handed while his other held the coffee cup.

That stupid phone! Bitsy felt her irritation meter filling up, bar by bar. Why did someone have to bother poor Cord so much? Already committed to her awkward lean past the plant, she raised one arm and waved to get his attention, trying to force a smile onto her annoyed and embarrassed features. Just look up for a second, would you?

But he must have had his peripheral vis-processing off, because -- no, he's Real ... maybe whatever they're looking directly at is just what they're looking at?

Bitsy, though, did have a moderate arc to her visual frame. And in one corner of it, something flickered ... a motion ...

Gigory.

Oh, no, she thought. But there he was, turned around in the line, with a clear view of her waving because she'd thrust her whole upper body out past the fern frond.

And of course, he was waving back.

yes! it's on! it's happening! (the prelude)

in the spirit of striking while the iron is hot, i'm holding my feet to the fire and burning all my bridges with old, slacker claire who was too slacky-slackish to finish that book she started back in ... (looks at blog archive) ... 2013!!!

that lazy slacker bum of a claire took 4 months to write 5 teensy-shmeensy chapters in 2013 and 2014, then took almost three years to write chapter six and then promised to do better and immediately stopped novelizing at all.

but you're dealing with 2021 claire, people ... the claire with the dare! the claire who's all there! the claire who's going to sit her patoot in this chair and go on a total complete writing tear!

i mean, you know, like, next time.

this time i'm kind of easing into it nice and slow-like by adding a linky widget over on the left of the blog for all the chapters.

it's an important first step! i'm going to have to look back at those chapters a lot to get writing again! i mean, i hardly even remember what the book is about after four years ...

actual writing soon!

i promise!

two birds

i was about to write a post about making a new goal and having that new goal be to get back to writing my novel, but ...

the first thing i thought of for a title was, two birds, one stone.

which, then my brain had to go and think, wow, that's a mean figure of speech. who's out there throwing stones to kill birds? and getting so good at it that they can kill two with one stone?

and then my brain was also like, claire. seriously. it's just a metaphor, probably hundreds of years old. move on, already!

except that would still leave me needing a title, and i'd already typed the "two birds" part, so i wondered if there was any way i could save it, and then my brain came up with: two birds, one stoned.

hah! suddenly i'm thinking of these two birds ...

bird #1: whoa, dude. you look out of it today.

bird #2: yeah man, i am soooo stoned.

bird #1: well be careful or some human's gonna hit you with a rock!

bird #2: no way, i'm just going to walk around right behind you all day and you can be my shield.

bird #1: uh ... i guess that's okay.

bird #2: totally! i mean, what could go wrong?

anyway, there's my post. setting a new goal, digging out my waaaay old book, and two birds, one stoned.

xoxo,

claire

accomplishment through inertia

earlier this year you may recall i was fretting over my blogging productivity and then realized i actually was doing pretty good compared to my historical productivity record.

and i've kept doing pretty good!

now, though, here's a whole month i haven't blogged at all.

: (

and what might be worse is, with this post, i just tied my previous second-place year for total number of blog entries.

so why is that worse, claire? (you may be asking.)

because now all i need to do is blog one more time this year, and i've accomplished a new second place year.

i can totally slack (well, almost totally) and still say, "great! i've only ever blogged more one year out of all the years i've been blogging!"

it's a real temptation to get lazy-daisy for the next couple of months.

but claire! (you might be thinking.) why not just make a goal of beating your number one year? that's only like, another six or seven posts!

glah! the pressure!

i don't know.

which one is worse? being lazy or being stressed?

definitely being stressed.

but ...

i mean, it's not like i haven't set goals and blown it on them before. (see: claire's attempt to write a novel a couple years back.)

so what's the big deal?

okay, you've convinced me!

new goal: at least 27 total posts for 2021!

can i do it???

stay tuned.
